Travel Medical Insurance and a Trip Cancellation Plan Cover You for Nearly Every Issue
Below is a comparison of travel insurance plans available to all nationalities. We offer side-by-side analysis so you can compare travel medical insurance plans. We also provide the criteria you can use to assess trip cancellation plans.
Travel medical plans cover emergency medical care should you get sick or injured. They also offer additional benefits listed below. However, they do not cover the cost of your trip. Travel medical plans are typically less expensive because they do not offer trip cancellation benefits.
Trip cancellation plans, also known as "trip can" plans, cover the cost of your trip should you have to cancel for covered reasons. They also offer additional benefits, such as trip interruption coverage and emergency medical benefits – although the medical benefits are not as robust as travel medical plans.
Travel insurance can be confusing. The trip cancellation insurance overview and travel medical insurance comparison below will help you analyze the differences in coverage between plans. Then, you can find the coverage that fits your needs and your budget.

Travel medical plans typically offer a more comprehensive array of medical benefits than trip insurance (or trip cancellation) plans but exclude coverage for trip cancellation. These plans are suited to the traveler who is going abroad from one week to one year and is concerned with the risks of getting sick or injured while in a foreign country.
The primary benefit of travel medical insurance is emergency medical insurance. This provides coverage if you are ill or injured and need to see a doctor or go to a hospital. Standard with all these plans is a 24-hour emergency assistance hotline. You can call anytime, day or night, for assistance in finding a doctor, choosing a hospital, or even replacing a lost visa. Other benefits include repatriation, which will get you back to your home country quickly, and emergency evacuation.

Compare Costs for the Best Travel Medical Insurance Plans
When comparing the costs of travel medical insurance plans, you should take several things into consideration.
We recommend reviewing and comparing the various benefits, additional options, and exclusions or restrictions in addition to the cost. Make sure you are eligible, and the plans cover what is most important to you. When you request a quote for the various plans, you can adjust your deductible and maximum limit to get the best cover for your specific needs.

Restrictions and Limitations
- The Atlas plan is not available to individuals who are physically located in the states of New York, Maryland, or Washington, as well as in the countries Canada and Australia at the time of purchase.
- The Voyager plan cannot accept an address in Maryland or New York. You must make your initial purchase in the U.S. before departing on the trip.
- A Primary Plan is a Group health benefit plan, an individual health benefit plan, or a governmental health plan designed to be the first payer of claims for an Insured Person. If Medicare is the Primary Plan, see the Certificate of Coverage to determine how this Plan will pay benefits. NOTE: Medicaid and VA benefits are not deemed a primary health plan.
If you need more comprehensive coverage for a year or longer, consider an international medical plan. If you travel abroad multiple times each year, consider an annual travel insurance plan. If you would like to insure the cost of your trip, consider a trip cancellation insurance policy.
This comparison of the best travel medical insurance plans contains a summary description of plan benefits, conditions, limitations, and exclusions. A certificate containing the complete Certificate Wording with all terms, conditions, and exclusions will be included in the fulfillment kit. Review your plan policy and certificate before and after you have applied. You may cancel your plan during the "look back" period if the policy does not meet your needs. Contact us for help, guidance, and to apply. Let us know if you need assistance in comparing travel medical plans. If you are traveling for a longer period and/or want more comprehensive medical insurance, review our annual global health insurance plans.

Trip Cancellation Insurance: What It Is, Why You Need It, and How to Compare Travel Cancellation Plans
As previously noted, travel insurance covers you only while you are on your trip. If you want protection in case your trip is canceled, you will need trip cancellation insurance, also known as travel cancellation insurance.
International Citizens Insurance partners with Trawick and IMG to provide trip cancellation insurance. Trawick Safe Travels Voyager and IMG iTravelInsured Trip Cancellation Insurance offer comprehensive coverage for trip cancellation and interruption as well as emergency medical coverage. Both plans also offer the option to include Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage at an additional cost. Please note that these plans are available to US citizens or US residents traveling abroad.
Travel cancellation plans typically cover some or all of your expenses if you cannot go on your trip, depending on your selected option. These plans also offer additional benefits to travelers, including emergency medical coverage and coverage for lost luggage. Generally, the more you spend on your trip, the more likely you are a good candidate for cancelation insurance.
In order to compare trip cancellation plans and find the one that’s right for you, first make a list of your budget and what is most important to you. While “cancel for any reason” insurance is the easiest, it is generally the most expensive. A lower-priced policy may cover only specific circumstances, so you must review it carefully. If you want your rental car, sports equipment, or other items covered, you will want to check for things such as:
- COVID-19 Benefits
- Missed Connection Coverage
- Rental Car Damage
- Event Ticket Registration Fees
- Sports and Golf Equipment Rental
- Electronic Equipment Coverage
- Travel Inconvenience Coverage
- Flight Accident Coverage
If you have more questions, you can learn more about options, including trip cancellation, at our detailed Trip Cancellation Insurance page.

Considerations When You Compare Travel Insurance Plans
Review and Compare the Benefits and Exclusions
The most important factors are the benefits (what is covered) and exclusions (what is not covered). The benefits and exclusions should be laid out in detail for you to review. Although two companies may offer a similar benefit amount, if you review exclusions, one provider might exclude coverage for certain benefits that are not excluded by the other. Therefore, you should review both the benefit and exclusions in the plan details. Ask us for a copy of the "policy certificate" and "plan rules" which will provide a comprehensive list of all benefits and exclusions.
Travel Insurance Reviews
Who is the company behind the plan? In most cases, you will be interacting with the plan administrator should you need to file a claim or receive assistance while abroad. Try calling the plan administrator's customer service or claims phone number and see what kind of response time you get from their call center. We have screened all of the plan administrators listed on this site to ensure quality customer service.

We are often asked about online reviews of travel insurance companies. Clients are often confused as the majority of reviews are negative and filed by upset consumers. The thousands of customers with positive experiences are not as motivated to file positive reviews. As a result, there are more negative reviews than positive - which is not an accurate reflection of the insurer. Be assured that most insurance companies, and all of the ones we recommend, are willing to pay legitimate claims.
All of the travel insurance companies listed on our website have been reviewed by our team. We have personally visited their offices and met with the management teams. Therefore, we are confident in recommending them to our clients. If you are not satisfied, we will support you in your effort to get your issue resolved with the insurer and quickly as possible.
